Delhi: Former India Test cricketer CD Gopinath, the last surviving member of India’s historic first Test win, died at the age of 96 in Chennai. According to ESPNcricinfo, 96-year-old Gopinath was India’s oldest Test cricketer and the second oldest Test cricketer in the world after Australia’s Neil Harvey, who is 97 years and 183 days old.

Gopinath of Chingleput was born on 1 March 1930 in Chennai, and breathed his last at the age of 96 years and 39 days. A stylish batsman who was adept at playing a variety of shots, Gopinath played 83 first-class matches. In 119 innings, he scored 4259 runs at an average of 42.16, which included 9 centuries and 23 half-centuries. His highest score was 234.
Gopinath made his Test debut in 1951 against England at the Brabourne Stadium and played his last match in 1960 against Australia at the Eden Gardens. On his Test debut, he scored 50 not out in the first innings, batting at number eight, the highest score of his Test career, and made 42 in the second innings, helping India draw the match. The start of his Test career was historic for Indian cricket, as India recorded its first Test win against England in the fifth Test of that series. Gopinath had scored 35 runs in the only innings of that match.
Overall, in eight Test matches and 12 innings, Gopinath scored 242 runs, including one half-century, and averaged 22. After Gopinath’s demise, 95-year-old Chandrakant Patankar, who played a Test match against New Zealand at Eden Gardens in 1956, is now India’s oldest living Test cricketer.
