Rashid revealed that doctors had advised him to stay away from red-ball cricket following a back injury he suffered in 2023.
Despite this, he played the Bulawayo Test against Zimbabwe in January 2025. In that match, he bowled 67 (or about 55) overs, which Rashid himself termed as madness. He told that the doctor had clearly said that if he continues Test cricket, his career may be short. The doctor had said that if you want to play cricket then stay away from red-ball, otherwise you will not be able to play for long. But I did not listen to him and played the test. When they came to know that I bowled so many overs, they were surprised
Actually, Rashid had refused to undergo surgery at the time of his injury keeping in mind the 2023 World Cup, so that he could play for the team. This decision affected his bowling and he had to suffer a lot of pain. Now he is more cautious about his workload.
Rashid has clearly indicated that he will probably not take part in the next Test match against India to be held on June 6. He said, ‘I have played one Test this year, now I will take some rest. If I get injured again during this period, my career may be over. I can’t play 100 Tests because we play only one Test in a year.
Currently, Rashid’s entire focus is on IPL 2026, where he is playing for Gujarat Titans and has taken five wickets in three matches. After this his eyes are on the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Rashid said that he likes ODI cricket and he wants to play in this format for a long time, but for this workload management is necessary. “Test cricket is becoming difficult for me. I will try, but it is not possible to play more than one Test in a year.
Rashid Khan, who made his Test debut in 2018, has played only six Test matches so far, in which he has taken 45 wickets and his average has been 20.44.
These figures show his impact, but now he is focusing on striking a balance to save his career.
