Veteran umpire Anil Chaudhary has explained why the on-field umpires expressed his unhappiness with Tim David in the IPL 2026 clash between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Mumbai Indians on Sunday. Chaudhary stated that the players seemed to have been too involved in the decision-making regarding the ball when it’s only the umpires call about which one to pick. Tim David had seemingly been scolded by umpire Virender Sharma.

What happened between Tim David and the umpires in the IPL 2026 match?

The incident occurred in the 18th over of the innings when the umpire decided to change the ball, which had supposedly gone out of shape after David hit Hardik Pandya’s delivery for a maximum. With David continuously tossing the ball to check it, the on-field umpires weren’t happy as a slight heated moment occurred, with Virender Sharma leading it.

In a video uploaded on Star Sports, Chaudhary explained that both batters and bowlers look for an advantage that is skewed towards them when it comes to assessing the ball. Nevertheless, the umpires have a final say and the bowlers have to play with whatever is selected.

Phil Salt, Rajat Patidar blast the Royal Challengers Bengaluru to 240 against Mumbai Indians

While Salt was their early enforcer, Rajat Patidar, who walked out after the 28-year-old’s dismissal, went hard from the outset, allowing no respite for the home side. The veteran cricketer was 33 off 8 at one stage and got to his half-century only in 17 deliveries, making it the second-fastest half-century by an RCB batter. Patidar was dismissed by Mitchell Santer for a 20-ball 53. Virat Kohli had also chipped in with a half-century.

While the Mumbai Indians had strung some good overs towards the end, Tim David finished the innings with a six to take the Royal Challengers to 240/4 in their stipulated 20 overs.
