Punjab Kings (PBKS) head coach Ricky Ponting revealed the key elements behind his team’s winning mentality after their spectacular seven-wicket win against Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2026 season. With this win, PBKS achieved their fourth win this season and they are the only team so far who is unbeaten. After winning four out of five matches, one match was abandoned due to rain.

Speaking to GeoHotStar after the match at the Wankhede Stadium, Ponting said building a winning team starts with a supportive environment where players feel valued and unify them.

He also said that his job as a coach is to guide and challenge players, not control them, and that it is important to accept failure in the game.

Ponting said, “For me, it starts with creating the right environment, where every player feels valued and they are on the same page. As a coach, I am there to support them and challenge them, not control them. When they fail, they should understand that it is part of the game.”

The former Australian cricketer also said that success in T20 cricket depends on certain players performing well on any given day, so it is extremely important to have clearly defined roles and the right team culture.

He also pointed out that supporting players like Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh helps in their good performances, which further adds to the success of the team.

Ponting said, “In T20 cricket you just need a few players to perform well on any given day. So, it is about building a strong group, with clearly defined roles. That was a big part of our auction strategy, bringing in the right people so that we can shape the culture of the team.

When players, like Prabhasimran and Shashank, get support, they perform well, and that ultimately decides the results.”

Mumbai Indians, batting first, posted a score of 195/6, led by a brilliant 112* from Quinton de Kock and a crucial 122-run partnership with Naaman Dheer, who scored 50. In the bowling of PBKS, Arshdeep Singh won the title of best player of the match by taking 3 wickets for 22 runs in 4 overs.

In reply, PBKS chased the target in just 16.3 overs and scored 198/3. Prabhsimran Singh scored unbeaten 80 runs in 39 balls, while captain Shreya S Iyer played a brilliant inning of 66 runs in 35 balls.

The pair turned the match in their favor after the initial setbacks. Allah Ghazanfar took 2 wickets for 32 runs for Mumbai, but the bowlers performed very ineffectively and PBKS won easily.

With this win, PBKS took the first place in the points table with four wins and one abandoned match, while Mumbai Indians moved to ninth place with just one win from five matches.
