Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathiranahas finally linked up with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), offering a timely boost to a side that has endured a difficult start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. The franchise shared updates of his arrival on social media, raising hopes among fans for a turnaround in fortunes.

KKR, a three-time IPL champion team, currently finds itself at the bottom of the points table. With just one point from six matches, earned through a rain-affected encounter against Punjab Kings, the team has struggled to find rhythm, particularly in the bowling department.

Pathirana’s return could prove to be a crucial factor in reviving their campaign.

The right-arm pacer had been sidelined due to a calf strain he sustained during the T20 World Cup earlier this year. After completing his rehabilitation, he successfully cleared the mandatory fitness tests conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket and secured the required no-objection certificate. He has now joined the squad ahead of their upcoming clash against Rajasthan Royals at Eden Gardens on Sunday, April 19.

Pathirana will likely undergo a few training sessions, during which the medical staff will closely monitor his fitness and match readiness before making a final decision.

Bought for a hefty Rs 18 crore at the previous IPL auction, Pathirana was always expected to miss the initial phase of the tournament.

Although there were earlier indications that he might return in time for the Gujarat Titans fixture, his comeback was slightly delayed.

KKR’s struggles have largely stemmed from an underperforming bowling attack. The absence of Mustafizur Rahman, coupled with injuries to Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, has significantly weakened their pace unit. Additionally, Varun Chakravarthy’s lack of form has put extra pressure on Sunil Narine and Anukul Roy in the spin department.

With several heavy defeats already in the season, including failing to defend a total of 220 in Mumbai, KKR will be hoping that Pathirana’s presence can help stabilise their bowling and spark a much-needed revival.
