According to the report, Iyer is being seen as a strong option within the BCCI.

Iyer’s captaincy experience also works in his favor. He led Delhi Capitals to the IPL final in 2020 and led Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2024. Apart from this, his performance with Punjab Kings in 2025 was also excellent, where the team reached the finals. Although Suryakumar Yadav led India to the title in the 2026 T20 World Cup, his individual batting form remains a matter of concern.

Suryakumar’s performance, especially in big matches, was not as expected. In the World Cup, his scores against South Africa, West Indies, England and New Zealand were 18, 18, 11 and 0 respectively, which shows his weakness in pressure matches.

The report also said that it will not be an easy decision to directly bring Iyer into the team and give him the captaincy, as he last played T20 International in 2023 and is not a part of the current setup. But keeping the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind, the selectors have time and can plan changes in the T20 team.

The tour of England and Ireland in the coming June-July is considered very important for Suryakumar Yadav. There will be special attention on his batting in this tour. If he is not able to perform consistently, then the team management may look towards a new captain for the future.

At present, head coach Gautam Gambhir is supporting Suryakumar and is in favor of keeping him as captain till the 2028 T20 World Cup. But the selection committee, which is headed by Ajit Agarkar, will take the final decision on the basis of performance only. The team management is making long-term plans keeping in mind the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and T20 World Cup.

In such a situation, Shreyas Iyer’s claim is getting stronger. If his form and leadership abilities continue like this, then we may see a big change in the Indian T20 team in the coming times.
