Mumbai Indians batter Tilak Varma scored a hundred in the IPL 2026 match against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium on April 20. The southpaw took the score to 199/5 in their allotted 20 overs on April 20.

He faced 45 balls to reach his first IPL century and thanked fans for supporting him. He hit 8 boundaries and 7 sixes, with his runs coming at a strike rate of 224.44.

Tilak equals Sanath Jayasurya’s MI record

Tilak equalled the Mumbai Indians’ record set by former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya. Tilak’s 45-ball century is the joint-fastest by a Mumbai batter in the history of the league. Jayasuriya struck a hundred in 45 balls in IPL 2008.

Tilak ups the ante

He was 19 in 22 balls at one stage, but went berserk after that. With MI on 103 for 4 after 14 overs, Tilak decided to take on GT bowlers, taking his score to 75 off 38 balls after taking 26 runs from the 18th over bowled by Ashok Sharma.

Tilak was on 80 when Shubman Gill gave the ball to Prasidh Krishna to bowl the 20th over. He hit two fours and two sixes to complete his ton.

GT decide to bowl first

GT captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl first. “The wicket looks decent, but there was dew in the previous game, so chasing is more sensible. It is good to know the target,” Gill said.

MI captain Hardik Pandya wanted to bowl first as well.  Danish Malewar and Krish Bhagat are the two debutants for the five-time champions.
