Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling coach Varun Aaron attributed Abhishek Sharma’s match-winning innings against Delhi Capitals to the young opener’s growing maturity and clarity of approach. Aaron described Sharma as a player who now understands conditions and embraces responsibility.

Following SRH’s comfortable victory, Aaron said Sharma continued the form he had shown towards the latter stages of the World Cup, with the familiar surroundings of the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium further enhancing his confidence.

“He has done so well here over the years. When he comes to Hyderabad and is around the team, it becomes his safe space. He believes he is the man to take the game forward, and that intent is really important,” Aaron stated during the post-match press conference.

The SRH bowling coach also emphasized the role of the team’s support staff in shaping Sharma’s development. He noted the consistent efforts of the batting coaches, including detailed discussions about match situations, had helped the opener refine his game. “He had a simple plan today–to bat till the last over. The batting staff has put in a lot of work with him, and that is clearly visible now,” he added.

Aaron highlighted that Sharma’s success results not only from aggressive strokeplay but also from his ability to read conditions and adapting accordingly. He pointed out that the pitch did not allow reckless hitting and Sharma’s ability to pace his innings was crucial. “You cannot be the number one T20 batsman in the world without maturity. He assesses the opposition and the surface before deciding how to play. Today was not a pitch where you could go hard at every ball, and he respected that,” Aaron said.

While recognizing Sharma’s high-risk style, Aaron noted such an approach requires patience and support from the team when outcomes are uncertain. “He has shown glimpses of this before. When you play a high-risk, high-reward game, it may not always come off. But a player like Abhishek deserves that leeway,” he added.

Sharma broke multiple records by scoring his second-highest IPL score. On Tuesday, he reached his second IPL century from just 47 balls, hitting nine fours and ten sixes in a striking display of power-hitting. He finished unbeaten on 135 from 68 deliveries as Hyderabad posted 242 for 2 in their 20 overs, marking Sharma’s second IPL century.

This innings took Abhishek Sharma to nine T20 centuries, equaling Virat Kohli among Indian batsmen. In the all-time list, Chris Gayle leads with 22 centuries, followed by Babar Azam (12) and David Warner (10). Sharma now joins a group featuring Quinton de Kock, Rilee Rossouw and Sahibzada Farhan.

Defending the total of 243, Eshan Malinga delivered an excellent four-wicket haul, steering Sunrisers Hyderabad to a 47-run victory over Delhi Capitals.
