Gurbaksh Singh and his brother Balbir Singh have a very special achievement in the sports world. In the Mexico City Olympic Games, Gurbaksh and his brother Balbir Singh Grewal took the field together on behalf of the Indian hockey team and made a big contribution in winning a medal for the country. This was one of the few occasions in the history of Indian hockey, when a pair of real brothers had participated in the Olympics together.
Not only the hockey field became a witness to the skills of Gurbaksh Singh, but even after spreading his glory with the hockey stick, he remained associated with it and prepared new talents for the country. He was posted as a senior sports officer in Western Railways for a long time. This was the time when Gurbaksh connected the youth coming from different parts of the country including Rajasthan to the railway hockey team. This helped many players to make their mark at the national level, while Railways also became stronger as a team.
It is said that a soldier and a sportsperson never retire completely. Even after that he remains connected to his area. Gurbaksh was also no different from this. Even after retirement in Mumbai, he remained dedicated to sports. He served as Honorary Secretary in Mumbai Hockey Association and during this time did many important works for the association. This is why his contribution to Indian hockey will always be remembered.
