New Delhi: Delhi Capitals have confirmed that Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc will be available for selection in the Indian Premier League 2026 season only from May 1, due to No Objection Certificate (NOC) conditions and workload management concerns.

The update was shared by DC captain Axar Patel following the team’s heavy defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Monday.

NOC condition delays Starc’s availability

Axar Patel confirmed that Starc has already joined the Delhi Capitals camp but cannot feature in matches until the NOC granted by Cricket Australia comes into effect.

“Yes, Mitchell Starc has joined. He has got the NOC from the 1st, so he can play after that. His workload is being monitored. Whenever he is available, we will look to play him,” Axar said during the post-match interaction.

The delay highlights the growing importance of workload management for international cricketers, especially those involved in all formats and high-intensity tournaments across the calendar.

Heavy workload behind delayed return

The 36-year-old left-arm pacer has been out of competitive action since late January following a demanding international schedule. Starc played a pivotal role in the recent Ashes series, where he was named Player of the Series after claiming 31 wickets at an impressive average of 19.93.

During the five-match Test series, Starc bowled over 150 overs, underlining the physical toll on fast bowlers at the highest level. Following the Ashes, he also represented the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL), adding further strain to his workload.

His last appearance came against the Perth Scorchers, where he suffered a fall on his left shoulder and elbow while attempting a catch. Although he took a short break in February, lingering soreness delayed his return to full fitness and subsequently his arrival in the IPL.

Boost expected for Delhi Capitals

Starc’s inclusion is expected to significantly strengthen Delhi Capitals’ bowling attack as the team enters a crucial phase of the tournament.

Known for his ability to generate pace, swing and deliver under pressure, the Australian quick brings valuable experience to the squad.

With DC struggling for consistency this season, Starc’s presence could provide the much-needed edge, particularly in the Powerplay and death overs.

RCB dominate DC in one-sided clash

Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals endured a disappointing outing against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, suffering a comprehensive defeat at home.

RCB’s pace duo of Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismantled DC’s batting line-up, bowling them out for just 75 runs in 16.3 overs. Abishek Porel (30) and David Miller (19) were the only notable contributors.

In response, RCB chased down the target with ease in just 6.3 overs. Devdutt Padikkal scored an unbeaten 34, while Jacob Bethell added a quick 20. Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 25, sealing a dominant win for the visitors.

Points table scenario

With this victory, Royal Challengers Bengaluru have strengthened their position in the IPL 2026 standings. The team has now won six out of eight matches, accumulating 12 points and sitting comfortably in second place.

On the other hand, Delhi Capitals continue to struggle, registering their fifth defeat in eight matches. With just three wins so far, they remain in seventh position and face an uphill battle to qualify for the playoffs.

Conclusion

Mitchell Starc’s delayed availability due to NOC conditions and workload management reflects the evolving demands of modern cricket. While Delhi Capitals will have to wait until May 1 to field their star pacer, his return could prove crucial in reviving their campaign.

As the tournament progresses into a decisive phase, DC will be hoping that Starc’s experience and match-winning ability can help turn their fortunes around and keep their playoff hopes alive.
