Cricket South Africa postponed the announcement of its squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cupjust minutes before it was scheduled to take place, creating speculation around the final selection decisions. CSA had earlier confirmed that the squad would be unveiled live, but shortly before the announcement, the board issued another statement saying the event had been delayed due to the need for further internal reviews. A revised date for the squad announcement is expected to be communicated soon.
The delay comes at a crucial stage as all participating teams are required to submit their final squads to the ICC before the tournament support period begins in early June. Once the deadline passes, teams are only permitted to make changes in exceptional circumstances, such as injury replacements or ICC-approved cases.
According to ESPNcricinfo, the postponement is believed to be linked to a minor internal matter rather than a major selection dispute. However, there are a couple of selection issues that could be influencing discussions within the South African camp.
One of the biggest talking points is the possible return of former South African fast bowler Shabnim Ismail. The experienced pacer, regarded as one of the quickest bowlers in women’s cricket, has made herself available for selection after retiring from international cricket following the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup.
Although she has not represented South Africa for more than three years, she has remained active and impressive in franchise leagues around the world. Head coach Mandla Mashimbyi is believed to be keen on including her in the squad. If selected, Ismail would significantly strengthen a bowling attack that has heavily relied on star all-rounder Marizanne Kapp. Kapp has not played since February due to illness and missed recent series against New Zealand and India while recovering.
However, she is expected to regain fitness before the World Cup begins. Another selection dilemma surrounds former captain Dane van Niekerk. Van Niekerk returned to international cricket last year but suffered a calf injury during South Africa’s tour of New Zealand and has not played since. While her batting experience remains valuable, concerns over her fitness and lack of bowling since her comeback may affect her chances of securing a place in the final squad.
