When Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer comes out for the toss on the Dharamshala ground today, he will make a special achievement in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Shreyas will become the fifth player in the world to play 100 IPL matches as captain. Before him, greats like MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir had achieved this position. In today’s match, Punjab Kings will face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

‘Do or die’ match for both the teams in the playoff battle

Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, Punjab Kings had made a very aggressive start in IPL 2026, as a result of which, despite losing five consecutive matches, the team still remains in the top-4 in the points table. However, now the team cannot afford another defeat. If Punjab has to face defeat today, their chances of being out of the playoff race will increase significantly. On the other hand, Royal Challengers Bangalore would also like to register a win at any cost. It is noteworthy that last season, RCB won its first IPL title by defeating Punjab. For the first time after that historic final, both the teams will face each other on the field.

Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy career: final guaranteed

Shreyas Iyer has so far captained Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings in a total of 99 matches. His record as a captain has been very impressive. Under his captaincy, Delhi Capitals reached the finals, while he made KKR the champion. In his very first season with Punjab Kings, Shreyas took the team to the finals. Even at the beginning of the current season, PBKS’s performance was excellent, but in the last five matches the team’s rhythm has completely deteriorated.

List of most successful captains of IPL

The record of playing most matches as captain in IPL is in the name of MS Dhoni, who captained Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rising Pune Supergiants in a total of 235 matches and led CSK to the title five times. Second in this list is Rohit Sharma, who captained Mumbai Indians in 158 matches and made the team champion a record five times.

At number three is Virat Kohli, who took command for RCB in 143 matches, although he could not lead the team to the title.

At fourth place is Gautam Gambhir, who captained Delhi Daredevils and KKR in 129 matches and made Kolkata champion twice in 2012 and 2014. Today Shreyas Iyer will join this prestigious club and become the fifth captain to touch the mark of 100 matches.
