Chelmsford: India women began their England tour in emphatic fashion with a commanding 38-run victory over England in the first T20I at Chelmsford. A dominant all-round performance, led by outstanding contributions from Jemimah Rodrigues and Nandani Sharmahelped the visitors secure a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The win reflected India’s strength across departments, combining aggressive batting, disciplined bowling, and sharp fielding to outclass the hosts in all aspects of the game.
After being put in to bat, India faced an early setback with opener Smriti Mandhana departing cheaply. However, the innings was stabilised by Yastika Bhatia and Jemimah Rodrigues, who stitched together a crucial partnership.
Bhatia played a composed innings of 54 runs off 40 balls, striking 9 fours and a six. Her knock provided the foundation for India to rebuild after the early wicket.
Rodrigues then took charge, playing a superb innings of 69 runs from just 40 deliveries. Her knock included 10 boundaries and a six, showcasing both elegance and aggression.Rodrigues anchored the innings brilliantly, ensuring India maintained momentum through the middle overs. In the final stages, Deepti Sharma added valuable runs with a quick cameo, helping India post a competitive total of 188/7 in their allotted 20 overs.
England’s bowling effort was led by Lauren Bell, who picked up three wickets for 34 runs. Tilly Corteen-Coleman also impressed with disciplined bowling during the middle overs, but the target proved challenging.
Chasing 188, England’s innings got off to a shaky start, thanks to early breakthroughs from India’s bowling attack. Kranti Gaud struck crucial blows, removing Sophia Dunkley and Alice Capsey early in the innings.
The early wickets put England on the back foot, forcing the middle order to rebuild under pressure. Despite the setbacks, Amy Jones led a spirited fightback with a well-crafted innings.
Amy Jones kept England in contention with a determined 67 off 48 balls, hitting 7 boundaries. She found some support from captain Heather Knight, who contributed 21 runs.
However, the turning point came through Nandani Sharma’s exceptional bowling spell. She delivered match-winning figures of 3 wickets for 23 runs, removing key batters at crucial junctures. Her breakthroughs triggered a collapse in England’s middle order, effectively ending the hosts’ hopes of a successful chase.
Deepti Sharma also chipped in with an important wicket, while Kranti Gaud maintained pressure during the death overs with disciplined bowling.
Apart from Amy Jones, the rest of the England batting lineup struggled to build partnerships or accelerate the scoring rate. Regular wickets and tight bowling from India ensured that England never gained full control of the chase.
Eventually, England were restricted well short of the target, handing India a convincing 38-run victory in the opening match of the series.
