A change might hit India’s T20 leadership soon. Reports suggest Shreyas Iyer may take over from Suryakumar Yadav ahead of the matches against Ireland and England. Word comes from Dainik Jagran that officials have already settled on it. The nod should come through when the BCCI Apex Council meets online this Thursday.
Tilak Varma might take over as vice-captain, stepping into Axar Patel’s spot, so says the latest report. After the gathering wraps up, word will go out to Suryakumar about what’s been decided. Months back, he led India straight through to victory at the T20 World Cup 2026.
It seems the report said Gautam Gambhir supported Sanju Samson stepping into Suryakumar’s T20I role. Still, Ajit Agarkar didn’t appear to agree, sources suggested. Some on the panel shared doubts too. Consistency just hasn’t been there, they felt, when thinking about Samson leading regularly.
Sanju Samson helped India win the T20 World Cup, yet some say he wasn’t quite ready to lead. Because of that, the job went instead to Iyer, who now steps into the role for the team’s fastest version of the game.
Punjab Kings began IPL 2026 with sharp momentum, only to lose grip later through six straight losses that blocked their playoff path. Even so, Iyer kept swinging hard – his bat alive across 14 games, piling up 498 runs while smashing at a pace near 170; within those knocks sat one hundred, plus five fifties.
Now comes word that Iyer might step into the No. 4 spots for T20Is. On another note, even after leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru to two straight IPL wins and shining with the bat, talk of Patidar returning to the national team didn’t come up.
