Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill was at his best with the bat once again during the opening day of the India vs Afghanistan Test match. The hosts ended the day at 368 runs for the loss of three wickets from 85 overs. The 26-year-old was batting on 103 runs with Rishabh Pant, who is not out on 50.

The batter got to his 11th Test match ton and also created a special record along the way. Gill became the first Indian Test skipper to score runs inside a year. He got to the mark in 15 innings, which is three better than Virat Kohliwho got to the mark in 18 innings. The fastest Indian skipper to reach 1000 runs in Test cricket was Sunil Gavaskar, who got to the mark in 14 innings.

The 26-year-old got to the mark in a mere 351 days, which is 54 clear of the next best, which happens to be former India great Sachin Tendulkar, who did it in 405 days. Slowest to achieve the feat was Kapil Dev, who got in 1393 days compared to Gavaskar, 1347 days.

Earlier in the day, KL Rahul scored his 12th test century while Sai Sudharsan was out after scoring 81 runs.

Pant, playing his 50th Test for the national side, got to his fifty in the final over of the day and has already two fours and three sixes in his knock.

The 34-year-old Rahul began the day slowly, but once he got his eye in, there was no stopping the batter. Two boundaries post the lunch break took him to his fifty, and then he reached his ton with a couple of runs off Ziaur Rahman in the 61st over of the day.

Speaking at the end of the day, the Karnataka batter was asked about his knock, to which he said, “Happy to spend some time in the middle and to make the switch from T20 to Test cricket. Wicket was slow and low, which we expected because we had trained in similar wickets coming into the game.”

When asked how the wickets could behave going further into the contest, he said, “It will assist good bowling. Fast bowlers will have a huge say as the cracks are starting to open up, and the soil isn’t that hard.

There could be loads of uneven bounce in the game, there will be help for the bowlers as there is some rough as well.”
