India’s latest Test debutant Manav Suthar got into the act with the ball in his very first over and picked his maiden wicket. The 23-year-old had Abdul Malik going for a sweep shot and managing to top-edge the ball. KL Rahul, standing in the slips, and Mohammed Siraj running from square leg went for the catch.
In the end, it was Siraj who claimed the catch as both players nearly collided with each other. The Indian pacer wasn’t seemingly happy with his senior partner and was seen mentioning something. In the end, the home side went into the tea break on a happy note as they got the wicket of Malik for 16 runs. The batter was looking positive right from the word go, hitting three boundaries.
Earlier in the day, Suthar played his maiden innings as a batter and scored 28 runs from 41 balls. The batter hit two fours and two huge sixes during the course of his knock. The second of those sixes helped Shubman Gill and his side cross the 500-run mark. India eventually declared their innings at 564 for the loss of eight wickets.
Afghanistan lost their second wicket when Prasidh Krishna beat Sediqullah Atal for pace and got the batter out for 17 runs from 27 balls. Krishna bowling from round the wicket saw the ball nip into the batter, who got an inside edge and saw his off and middle-stump on the floor.
The Indian side made full use of the amazing batting conditions that were on offer on the opening day of the one-off Test to score 368/3 from 85 overs. The second innings began with Gill and Rishabh Pant looking to add more runs before the Indian skipper was out for 129, while Pant was dismissed for 81.
Washington Sundar, batting at number seven, came good once more to add some key runs for his side. The 26-year-old was not out on 52 off 68 balls when the innings was declared. Sundar and Suthar added 54 runs for the seventh wicket in just 85 balls.
