Team India have assumed complete control of the one-off Test match against Afghanistan heading into lunch on day three. Debutant Manav Suthar did the star turn with the ball, claiming 6 for 33 from his 22 overs, which also included 10 maiden overs. The visiting side was all out for 152 as Shubman Gill was quick to enforce the follow-on.
With these figures, the left-arm tweaker has recorded the second-best bowling figures by an Indian debutant in his maiden innings. The other best figures by an Indian bowler on debut are as follows.
Narendra Hirani – 8/61 vs West Indies, 1988 in Chennai
Manav Suthar – 6/33 vs Afghanistan, 2026 in New Chandigarh
Abid Ali – 6/55 vs Australia, 1967 in Adelaide
Dilip Doshi – 6/103 vs Australia, 1979 in Chennai
Suthar became the 319th Test debutant for the hosts ahead of the IND vs AFG test that began on Saturday. The 23-year-old from Rajasthan got his first wicket on Sunday when he had Abdul Malik caught by pacer Mohammed Siraj for 16 runs. His second wicket was that of Rahmanullah Gurbaz for 12, caught in the slips by Sai Sudharsan.
The youngster then dismissed Afsar Zazai in the final ball of the second day and then began the third day with the scalp of Sharafuddin Ashraf for 11 runs. The fifer came when Rahmat Shah went to play the sweep shot and missed the line of the ball, and was dismissed.
The sixth wicket was that of Mohammad Saleem Safi, who was adjudged LBW for a duck; the replays suggested that the ball was pitching out the leg side, but the batter didn’t take the review.
Veteran star Rahmat Shah scored 60 runs from 135 balls with the help of nine boundaries and a six. The right-handed batter on Sunday became the first Afghan player to score 1000 runs in the Test format.
His fifty came in the first session when he pulled Prasidh Krishna towards the fine leg region. Kuldeep Yadav made a mess of an easy fielding effort and saw the ball trickle to the boundary to help the batter reach his fifty.
