Pacer Gurnoor Brar scripted history on Saturday (June 20), amassing the most wickets by a bowler in his maiden men’s ODI assignment for the Indian National Cricket Team. He reached the milestone in the third and final ODI against Afghanistan in Chennai. Yuzvendra Chahal and Prasidh Krishna were the previous record holders, with six wickets each in three-match series against Zimbabwe (2016) and England (2021), respectively.
The right-arm pacer took 3 for 27 runs in the first ODI and followed it up with 3 for 60 in the second game in Lucknow. He needed just one wicket before the Chennai ODI and broke the record in his seventh over of the innings.
He had to work hard, and despite not getting a wicket in the first six overs of his spell, he touched the speed of 145 kmph and troubled the Afghanistan batters with pace and bounce. He didn’t allow Ibrahim Zadran to settle down and hit him on his helmet.
He bowled two no-balls and conceded a few boundaries, but Brar never lost his line and length.
In the second spell, he bowled hard lengths, and his short-pitched deliveries kept captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and Mohammad Nabi on the back foot.In the 38th over of Afghanistan’s innings, he got rid of Nabi, who failed to read his 138.6 kmph delivery.
Gurnoor has been the find of the series for the Men in Blue. He was spot on from the first game and will certainly play in the next fifty-over series in England. Captain Shubman Gill and head coach Shubman Gill are likely to back him despite the presence of other big names in the squad.
