Former India player Sadagoppan Ramesh suggested that Yashasvi Jaiswal become a wicket-keeper to get regular chances in the ODI squad. Ramesh reacted sarcastically after Jaiswal was not considered for the England ODI series despite scoring a century in his latest knock in the fifty-over format.

Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel left the southpaw out of the recently announced squad for three matches against England.

The 24-year-old scored an unbeaten 110 off 86 in the third and final ODI against Afghanistan in Chennai.

Reacting to Jaiswal’s exclusion, Ramesh called the batter unlucky.

“He is truly unlucky as he scored a hundred against Afghanistan. I would urge him to become a wicket-keeper. A few players are dropped even after scoring a century. It gives the feeling of insecurity,” he said.

Yashasvi has hit two hundreds in just six ODIs at an average of 71 and a strike rate of 97.60. He was given a chance against Afghanistan after Virat Kohli was ruled out of the bilateral assignment due to an injury.

With Kohli likely to return for the England series, Jaiswal was dropped by the decision-makers.

Meanwhile, India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill also commented on Jaiswal’s misfortune in the 50-over format after the opener’s hundred against the visiting team on June 20. Despite making his debut in 2023, he has played just 29 white-ball games for India in three years.

“It is not easy for a phenomenal player like him to sit out. When all the players are available, he misses out. He was excellent against Afghanistan.

I know he will continue to perform, and he will continue to make the full use of the chances he gets,” Gill said.

India’s three-match ODI series against England will start on July 14.
