Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was not able to set the stage on fire in his debut game, amassing just 14 runs off 10 balls against England in the second T20I in Manchester on July 14. Although he hit two sixes on Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue deliveries, the 15-year-old was beaten by pace several times. He was deceived by Will Jacks, with wicket-keeper Jos Buttler removing the bails in no time.
Sooryavanshi looked dejected while returning to the dressing room.Tongue troubled the opening batter with sharp pace and bounce while trying to play big shots. The young cricketer was not able to read the bounce at Old Trafford, just like the other opener, Abhishek Sharma. Vaibhav took a single after an inside edge on a yorker.
His big moment arrived against his Rajasthan Royals (RR) teammate Jofra Archer. He went down on his knee and lifted the Archer’s delivery over the wicket-keeper for his first six in international cricket. Archer responded with a well-guided bouncer and a yorker.
Sooryavanshi was not done yet and hit Tongue for a maximum in the midwicket region. He wanted to dominate Jacks from the start and went down the track on a ball outside off, only to be deceived by pace. He missed the cut shot, and Buttler completed the stumping. His stay came to an early end, but the fans enjoyed his two sixes and attacking intent.
He became the first Indian batter to be stumped on his T20I debut. The left-handed batter needs to learn patience as hitting fours and sixes is not easy in every game. He scored 776 runs for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League 2026 at an impressive strike rate.
The players like him are not born every day, and the team management will have to give him four or five T20Is to settle down. The failures are common in the shortest format of the game, and Sooryavanshi is all about taking risks and putting the team’s needs at the forefront. There would be hard and challenging times in the career of the Bihar-based batter, and his dismissals would be called reckless, but India need a batter like him in the long run.
