Repercussions of Mexico’s heartbreaking Round of 16 defeat against former champions England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup were felt nearly 2,000 miles away in East Los Angeles in California, USA, on Sunday (July 5) as four persons got shot.

The injured included a woman and a child, in addition to two men. All four were reportedly out of danger.

According to media reports, Mexico fans came together at an intersection in East Los Angeles in California following their team’s 2-3 defeat at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Argument leads to shooting

It was said that an argument started, which led to one person taking out a gun and firing several rounds, injuring the four. They included two bystanders, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. East Los Angeles, which has a massive concentration of people of Mexican origin, is located in the same county.

The injured woman and the child were the bystanders who were hit. They immediately left the scene and sought help from people.

While it was initially reported that four separate incidents of shooting took place at three locations, investigators later confirmed that all were caused by a single act of shooting, the reports added.

Victims’ injuries not life-threatening

The four victims were taken to local hospitals, where their injuries were found to be not serious. The gunman fled, and no arrests had been made as of Monday (July 6), the reports added.

In Mexico, fans rued the match result after the co-hosts ran one of their most impressive campaigns at the mega event, conceding no goal till against England. The match was chaotic, with the Three Lions prevailing over the home team despite being reduced to 10 men and at a venue generally considered to be Mexico’s fortress.

It was just the third defeat for Mexico at the Azteca since its opening six decades ago.

However, scenes of Mexico fans celebrating their team’s performance in the tournament unfolded in various parts of southern California, which shares a border with that country.
