Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Outsmarted By Jofra Archer. Ex-RCB Star's
Jofra Archer has clearly had the last laugh in his battle against young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The England speedster has dismissed the Indian teenage sensation twice in just three matches, and on both occasions, he used the same weapon, a well-directed short ball. In the third T20I, Sooryavanshi gloved one through to the wicketkeeper, and in the fourth game at Bristol, he top-edged another short delivery straight to a fielder.
The rivalry between the two Rajasthan Royals has been one of the most talked-about subplots of the series. During the IPL, social media was abuzz with clips of Sooryavanshi smashing Archer all over the nets. But former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has now weighed in, reminding everyone that international cricket is a completely different beast.
Moeen said he absolutely loved the way Archer approached Sooryavanshi in the matches. He acknowledged that the 15-year-old is a fantastic batter and he wasn't trying to undermine his talent in any way. However, Moeen made it clear that what happens in the nets stays in the nets, and international cricket can be a harsh and unforgiving place for young players. The pressure, the crowd, the quality of bowling—everything is ramped up several notches, and Sooryavanshi is learning that the hard way.
Sooryavanshi had earned his maiden India call-up after a sensational IPL season, where he scored 776 runs at a stunning strike rate of 237.30, with a century and five fifties. He made history by becoming India's youngest-ever international cricketer at just 15 years and 99 days old when he debuted in the second T20I. But since then, his scores have been modest , 14, 13, and 15 in his first three outings. Not bad for a debutant, but nowhere near the fireworks everyone expected after his IPL heroics.
He was brought into the side after Sanju Samson, who was the Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup, had a string of low scores. But Sooryavanshi hasn't quite been able to grab his opportunity with both hands just yet.
India have already conceded the series 0-3 to England, with one more match left to play. For Sooryavanshi, it's been a rollercoaster ride, from the high of an IPL breakout and a historic debut to the harsh reality check of facing one of the world's best fast bowlers in Archer. As Moeen wisely pointed out, international cricket is a different ball game, and this young star will have to adapt quickly if he wants to live up to the immense hype surrounding him.
