One of the most successful partnerships for the Indian Premier League had concluded on Monday when Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and coach Stephen Fleming decided to go their separate ways. Fleming and CSK, in combination, have created one of the best dynasties in IPL history, which has seen the franchise capture five titles and develop a winning culture around it. However, since winning the 2023 edition, the team’s performance has nose-dived to its worst in recent years. They finished fifth in 2024, last in 2025, and eighth in the 10-team league this year.
Now, CSK has entered the rebuilding phase. As per the reports in The Indian Express, the idea was taken after conducting extensive research following the Texas Super Kings, CSK’s sister franchise, finishing last in the latest Major League Cricket season.
“We had an honest discussion where we took stock of the situation, and we mutually decided to part ways,” said CSK Managing Director Kasi Viswanathan.
“We have just concluded this process and are now looking at approaching the next set of candidates.
We have not yet zeroed in on any particular individual,” he added.“Dhoni, who is currently in the UK, is expected to be heavily involved in the process, and he will likely meet a few candidates in The Hundred,” the report said.
Rupa Gurunath, the owner of CSK, lauded Fleming’s fantastic contribution and called him the mastermind behind the franchise’s spectacular success.
“Stephen Fleming has been the heart and soul of our coaching staff for almost two decades, guiding us through every phase of this incredible journey. On behalf of the Super Kings family, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to him for his tireless dedication, passion, and exemplary leadership. Stephen has been a phenomenal leader, and while our association may come to an end, he will forever remain a pivotal part of this franchise,” she said.
Viswanathan felt that Fleming’s impact on the franchise will continue to echo in the years to come.
“Stephen has played an instrumental role in shaping the foundation and philosophy of our franchise from the very beginning. He has been an incredible leader who has not only defined our approach to the game but also inspired us to strive for excellence both on and off the field. His contributions to cricket have been nothing short of extraordinary, and his legacy will undoubtedly live on for generations to come. We are truly honored to have had him as a part of our journey,” he added.
