India has to face the prospect of an ODI series win against England without one of their experienced batters, as KL Rahul has been ruled out of the second ODI due to illness.

After posting a formidable total in the opening ODI of the three-match series, India’s batting side managed to chase down the total with ease. Their captain, Shubman Gill and his team have arrived in Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, in high spirits to complete their series win. But just before the toss, Gill announced that KL Rahul would not be a part of the match due to illness, opening up the opportunity for Ishan Kishan to step in as a wicketkeeper.

England Opt to Bowl After Winning the Toss Against India

England captain Harry Brook won the toss and decided to bowl first in an attempt to exploit the conditions after losing the opening match.

Harry Brook reasoned it was a good opportunity to take advantage of the circumstances since his team put in a positive performance, although they lost the match. He also added that better footwork and shot-making with the bat could help England draw level in the series.

Shubman Gill also stated that they would have batted first as well, but after putting in a “near-perfect” performance in the previous match, they have every reason to believe that they will win again. In addition, Gill revealed that he was thrilled to return to Cardiff, where he had spent a wonderful time playing county cricket for Glamorgan during his stay there.

“We would have bowled first as well. We had a near-perfect game last time, and hopefully, we can repeat that. Cardiff brings back good memories because I played here for Glamorgan. Hopefully, I can add another one today,” said Gill while walking to the toss.

KL Rahul Misses Out, Ishan Kishan Gets His Chance

The most notable departure before the match was KL Rahul.

Shubman Gill stated that the wicketkeeper batsman has been unavailable due to illness, so India made their only substitution for the match. Ishan Kishan replaces Rahul in the batting order and covers his wicketkeeping duties as well.

This is an excellent opportunity for Kishan to assert himself as a reliable option in India’s ODI plans after being on the periphery for an extended period.

England Make Two Changes in Search of a Comeback

England made two changes to their playing XI after being beaten in the opening ODI.

Harry Brook revealed that Saqib Mahmood and Gus Atkinson were brought into the squad with Tongue, and Dawson was dropped.

Harry Brook added that they had learned their lesson after drawing positives from the way they fought back in the series opener.
“It’s a nice, even covering of grass, so hopefully, we’ll get some swing and seam movement early on,” said Brook. “We fought really well in the last game and just needed to execute slightly better.”
