Just when India needed them most, they lost one of their most valuable utility players.

All-rounder Washington Sundar is set to miss the third and deciding ODI against England after aggravating his right hamstring injury during the second ODI at Sophia Gardens. His absence creates a dilemma for the Indian management as the all-rounder has been a consistent performer in both innings, and the third ODI is set to be played at Lord’s, the home of English cricket. “Washington Sundar has a right hamstring injury and is out for the rest of the series. He sustained the injury during the second ODI at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. He will undergo a scan and a specialist’s opinion for the injury management,” said the official statement released by BCCI.

Washington’s injury has created a dilemma for Team India, as he was a key member in almost all the departments. With him injured, the Indian management is considering the options to either bolster the batting or get another all-rounder or an attacking spinner for the third ODI encounter.

Option 1: Recall KL Rahul and Strengthen a Fragile Batting Line-up

If India’s batting displays in England have shown a team weakness, it is the inability to put on partnerships when the top order begins to buckle.
The collapse in Cardiff was a chastening lesson for Virat Kohli and his men, who raced to 178 for 3 before crumbling to 233 all out. It underlined India’s frailty in the middle order, which has been a concern through their English sojourn.

KL Rahul was out of the second ODI with illness, and Ishan Kishan was drafted in as his replacement, but the inexperience showed as soon as he walked to the middle. Rahul provides something different with his all-round game and has shown time and again that he can be relied upon in tricky circumstances.
