India have finished their white-ball tour of England with a 2-1 loss in the ODI series, following up the 4-0 sweep in the T20I series. The Indian side was comprehensively beaten in the series despite winning the first game at Edgbaston with dominant performances with bat and ball. They have lacked clarity with player roles, have looked toothless with the ball on occasions, and have appeared lacking in clear bowling plans.

With a large gap between their next assignments in the 50-over format, here are changes that the Men in Blue could make ahead of their upcoming series as they strengthen their team for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Gurnoor Brar was one of the standout performers of India's 3-0 sweep of Afghanistan, finishing with seven scalps as the series' highest wicket-taker. The tall and lanky speedster from Punjab impressed with his hit-the-deck ability and high pace, which saw an inclusion to the side against England. Brar, however, has looked like a shadow of himself in the United Kingdom, spraying balls all around the wickets.

The seamer was able to manage just four wickets in three innings, with best figures of 2 for 61. He has gone for over six runs an over in all three games, with the worst return being his 0 for 97 at Lord's. While Brar has shown that he has the raw materials to succeed as a primary middle-overs enforcer, the team would think it wise to hand him a spell on the sidelines, which could see him improve his control over length, which could be vital in seamer-friendly conditions. 

2. Ishan Kishan

While Ishan Kishan has established himself as a key presence in the T20I side, his role in the ODI team still leaves a lot of clarity to be desired. Batting at number 4 in the two games he played, Kishan was unable to get going with the bat, scoring 1 and 14 in the final two games. The southpaw did take the gloves over KL Rahul, however, which points to his future role in the side.

An attacking batter familiarised with going hard at the top of the order, Kishan has looked out of place at number four. He could contribute more as a finisher or an opener with his ball-striking, the latter of which he showed he can execute with a double century.

Another player who has suffered across formats from a lack of role clarity has been Washington Sundar. The off-spinning all-rounder has been included in the team due to his versatility with the bat and even helped the team clinch victory at Edgbaston with a half-century. He was further hard done by a hamstring injury in the second game, which saw him unable to bowl and miss the third ODI entirely.

Washington has been used sparingly with the ball, bowling just four overs in the first game. While conditions may have played a role in his lack of overs, it has been a recurring theme across matches, which prompts questions over his inclusion alongside all-rounders Axar Patel and another seam-bowling all-rounder, in place of a potential frontline batter.
