Opening batsman Jake Weatherald has kept his place in Australia’s men’s Test squad for the forthcoming home series against Bangladesh.

Despite a modest Ashes campaign last summer, Weatherald features in the 13-man squad, which is strengthened by the return of three senior players from injury.

Captain Pat Cummins, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood and off-spinner Nathan Lyon have all recovered in time for the start of Australia’s demanding run of 21 Tests over the next 12 months.

The series against Bangladesh will begin in Darwin from 13–17 August, with the second Test to be held in Mackay from 22–26 August, forming part of the World Test Championship.

Absent from the side that contested the final Ashes Test against England in January are Usman Khawaja, who has retired, along with Michael Neser, Todd Murphy and Brendan Doggett.

Weatherald is set to resume his opening partnership with Travis Head after featuring in all five Ashes Tests, during which the Darwin-born left-hander accumulated 201 runs at an average of 22.33.

“There were moments in that Ashes series where we liked the combination of what Jake and Travis brought and how that looked collectively,” said Australia’s chair of selectors, George Bailey, on Tuesday.

“Also, individually, we saw glimpses of Jake at his best during that series. Hopefully we’ll see further growth from him and a deeper understanding of what it takes to succeed at Test level.”

Cummins has managed only one Test appearance since July last year due to stress fractures in his back.

The skipper returned for the third Test against England in Adelaide, where Lyon sustained a serious hamstring injury that required surgery.

Hazlewood, meanwhile, missed the Ashes series in December after suffering hamstring and Achilles issues.

“There have been some adjustments to his training and physical preparation to help prevent the setbacks he’s experienced,” Bailey explained.

While Steve Smith continues to describe his involvement on a series-by-series basis, Bailey added: “I don’t think I’ve seen him this enthusiastic or energised about the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for this Test team.”

“He’s certainly not the only one. For the senior players who’ve featured in a lot of Test cricket, there are some major series coming up and a real chance for this team to make a statement across a range of different conditions.”

Australia’s upcoming schedule also features away series against South Africa, India and England. The contests with Bangladesh will be followed by one-day and T20 series against England in November and December.
