Birmingham Phoenix produced an explosive batting display to secure a 10-run victory over Trent Rockets in a high-scoring The Hundred contest at Edgbaston. A total of 29 sixes were struck across the match as Phoenix successfully defended 214 to begin their campaign with an impressive win.

Joe Clarke and Will Smeed set the tone for the home side with a rapid opening partnership. The pair raced to 54 runs from the first 25 balls, and later both reached half-centuries. Clarke led the charge with a superb 68 from 33 deliveries, hitting seven fours and four sixes, while Smeed contributed 51 from 28 balls.

Phoenix maintained their momentum after Clarke’s dismissal. Rehan Ahmed launched an aggressive counterattack, clearing the ropes five times, while captain Donovan Ferreira added a quickfire cameo that included three sixes in just nine balls. Their combined efforts helped Birmingham finish on 214, matching the tournament record of 17 sixes in an innings.

In reply, Trent Rockets made a strong start through Ben Duckett and Finn Allen. The opening pair added 54 runs without loss during the Powerplay and kept pace with the required rate. However, Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq provided the breakthrough when Allen miscued a lofted shot and was caught at long-on by Scott Currie.

Currie then removed Duckett with a delivery that found the outside edge, leaving the Rockets needing to rebuild. Tariq continued to exert pressure in the middle phase and claimed the key wicket of Tim David for just two runs, with Clarke taking the catch behind the stumps.

Despite losing momentum, the visitors remained in contention thanks to Tom Banton, who struck a blistering 67 from 32 balls. His late assault kept the chase alive, but the target ultimately proved beyond reach as Trent Rockets closed on 204, 10 runs short of victory.

After the match, Clarke praised Phoenix’s batting depth and aggressive approach.

“We've got licence at the top of the order with our strength in depth. We got the team off to a good start, and then the big hitters came in at the end and got us extra momentum,” he said.

Speaking about keeping wicket to Usman Tariq, Clarke added: “It's interesting. I've spent the last few days keeping to him in the nets, trying to work out which balls are which, so it's going to be a hell of an experience through the tournament. He's been quality, and a very good 20 balls from him tonight.”
