India sustained a major blow before the upcoming two-Test match series against Sri Lanka as speedster Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of action due to a left knee injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday confirmed that the pacer has yet to recover from the injury he sustained in the ODI series against England.
The BCCI has also named the replacement for the pacer as Jammu and Kashmir seamer Auqib Nabi. The 29-year-old will make his debut for the senior team after a sensational display of skills in the domestic circuit and with India A.
“The Men’s Selection Committee has named Auqib Nabi as the replacement for Bumrah.
The Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler earns his first call-up to the senior team,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced in a release. The pacer hails from a small village in Baramulla district and becomes the third Jammu and Kashmir player to be recalled to the senior team after fellow left-hander Parvez Rasool and Umran Malik, who both played limited ODI cricket for India.
Nabi has been one of the most consistent pacers in the domestic circuit in the past two seasons, claiming 104 wickets in the last two Ranji Trophy campaigns, including 60 wickets in the 2025-26 season, which helped Jammu and Kashmir register their first-ever Ranji Trophy title victory.
Nabi is also a handy lower-order batter. The pacer also shone with the ball in India A’s recent tour of Sri Lanka, claiming six wickets in two first-class matches. Nabi was also a part of the Delhi Capitals’ 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) squad.
Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah’s situation took a turn for the worse after his left knee kept swelling after the ODI series against England.
The BCCI’s Sports Science Department at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru decided against pushing the pacer back into action immediately, considering his age and India’s congested cricket schedule.Bumrah, 32, had already missed the third ODI match against England at Lord’s after he suffered the injury in the second ODI.
The BCCI also informed that Sai Sudharsan’s participation in the Sri Lanka series was under review as the left-handed batter was nursing a foot injury, which he picked during the recent India A tour of Sri Lanka.
India’s Test matches against Sri Lanka will commence on August 15 in Galle.
