England have unveiled a 16-man squad for the opening two Tests of their home series against Pakistan, signalling a clear shift in direction. With Ben Stokes retired and Brendon McCullum departed, Joe Root takes the captaincy reins under interim coach Marcus Trescothick while new head coach Stephen Fleming waits in the wings to begin his tenure against South Africa in December.

The selection panel, led by Marcus North, has recalled Dan Lawrence after two years out and handed Jordan Cox the vital number three slot following Jacob Bethell's knee injury. Sam Cook and Brydon Carse also earn places, adding fresh bowling firepower.

However, the big talking points are the omissions of Sam Curran and Rehan Ahmed, both widely expected to fill the all-rounder void left by Stokes. North explained that Curran is carrying niggles from a heavy summer workload and isn't fully fit, while Rehan has "done nothing wrong" but was edged out by Lawrence for the batting balance at six, with Jamie Smith keeping at seven.

"We regard Rehan highly," North insisted. "But we felt our best six batters plus Smith gives us the right balance for this contest."

In the WTC standings, England sit seventh with a 24.36% points percentage, while Pakistan languish in ninth at just 6.67%. Both sides desperately need points, adding extra spice to the series.
