The controversy came in the wake of the second ODI between India and England at Cardiff last month, which saw speculation that Rohit Sharma would retire from ODI's after the third encounter at Lord's.

The reports revealed that the BCCI was quick to dismiss this development when it emerged that Sharma would not retire after the Edgbaston clash, which led to several outlets claiming that the T20 World Cup-winning captain's stint in the limited-overs format would conclude at Lord's.

Saikia responded by saying that the former India captain would continue to feature in the ODI team as and when he figures in the selectors' plans.

BCCI's Rohit Sharma Statement Creates Friction

Speaking to reporters including the PTI, ahead of the third ODI against England, Saikia strongly refuted reports that Rohit Sharma was set to retire from ODIs after the match at Lord's.

“I would like to clarify that there is no discussion that Rohit Sharma will play his farewell match in Lord's this Sunday,” he said.

Saikia went on to describe Rohit as a 'regular' in the ODI squad and that the match at Lord's was not seen as his 'last'.

That means that players like Yashasvi Jaiswal could get a chance to stake their claim at the 'No. 3 position' in the limited-overs format.
