India head coach Gautam Gambhir has played down concerns over the team's recent Test performances, insisting that the side is not struggling and that ICC rankings are not his main focus.
Speaking ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, Gambhir said India are going through a transition but remain focused on giving their best players regular opportunities and competing for trophies.
India lead the two-match series 1-0 after a convincing 165-run win in Galle. The second Test is scheduled to begin at the Sinhalese Sports Club on August 23.
India's Test side has faced scrutiny following a difficult run of results and changes within the squad.
Gambhir, however, rejected the suggestion that the team is struggling.
"We are not struggling, rankings don't matter. We are going through transition. There will be blips, but we have been playing consistent cricket since England," Gambhir said at the pre-match press conference.
The head coach also stressed the importance of keeping India's best players involved regularly.
"We have had discussion about everything.
We want our best players to play regular cricket. If we can field our best players then it's good for the team," he said.India's victory in Galle provided an important boost after their 0-2 series defeat to South Africa. Devdutt Padikkal and Manav Suthar were particularly influential in the win.
Padikkal scored 167 in the first innings and followed it with 44 in the second, while Suthar claimed 10 wickets in the match.
Gambhir also addressed the wider noise surrounding Indian cricket, making it clear that social media reaction and public opinion are not driving his approach.
"My job is to win trophies, not views and likes," Gambhir said.
The India coach was also asked about his discussions with chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
Gambhir chose not to reveal the details but said the conversations are focused on the future direction of Indian cricket.
"I wish I could tell. It's only about how we want to move forward with Indian cricket," he said.
Gambhir welcomed the immediate impact made by Padikkal and Suthar but cautioned against drawing conclusions from a single performance.
Padikkal was named Player of the Match after scoring 211 runs across the two innings, while Suthar's 10-wicket haul played a decisive role in India's 165-run victory.
"Extremely satisfying, work to be done. Good for Indian cricket that delivered straight away. Judging players on one match not fair," Gambhir said.
India now have the opportunity to complete a series sweep in Colombo and strengthen their position in the World Test Championship cycle.
For Gambhir, though, the priority remains clear: develop the team through its transition, give key players consistent opportunities and focus on winning rather than outside noise.
