Saransh Jain IND vs SL Test: Saransh Jain's long wait for international cricket finally ended in Colombo on Sunday as the 33-year-old earned his India debut in the second Test against Sri Lanka. His selection was already anticipated after Kuldeep Yadav was ruled out, but his arrival in the XI is also the result of years of consistent performances in domestic cricket. An all-rounder from Indore, Jain bowls off-spin and bats left-handed. His first-class record reflects his value with both bat and ball: 2,223 runs at an average of 31.75 and 188 wickets from 54 matches.
Saransh Jain's professional journey began with his Ranji Trophy debut in 2014, but opportunities came slowly. By 2022, he had featured in only eight first-class matches.
That year proved to be a major turning point. Representing Madhya Pradesh, Jain played a key role in their historic Ranji Trophy triumph, taking 13 wickets and contributing an important half-century during the knockout stage as the team secured its maiden title.
Since then, his reputation has continued to grow. Jain has now accumulated two first-class centuries and 14 fifties, while his 188 wickets underline his effectiveness as a frontline spinner.
His limited-overs numbers also show his all-round capabilities. In 47 List A matches, he has scored 553 runs and claimed 38 wickets. He has also featured in 20 T20 matches, taking 18 wickets.
Saransh Jain's selection for the Sri Lanka tour appears to be influenced by several factors.
Washington Sundar's injury created an opening, while Sri Lanka's batting line-up contains several left-handers, making an off-spinner an attractive option for India's management.
More importantly, Jain arrived in the squad after an outstanding domestic season. During the latest Ranji Trophy campaign, he scored 518 runs at an average of 57.55 and took 30 wickets.
He also impressed in the Duleep Trophy for Central Zone, producing two half-centuries in two matches and collecting 16 wickets. His performances earned him the Player of the Tournament award.
Jain's recent form for India A in Sri Lanka further strengthened his case.
In the second match of that tour, he remained unbeaten on 70 and claimed six wickets. In the second match of that tour, he remained unbeaten on 70 and claimed six wickets.
