KL Rahul Vice Captaincy: Former India and KKR batsman Akash Chopra has questioned the decision to appoint KL Rahul as India's Test vice-captain, arguing that the senior batsman's age makes it difficult to view him as the natural successor to Shubman Gill. Rahul replaced Rishabh Pant as India's Test vice-captain earlier this year, with the change announced when the selectors named the squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan. While Rahul remains an experienced option with leadership credentials, Chopra believes the vice-captain should ideally be someone who can eventually take over the captaincy.
Akash Chopra explained his view while responding to a fan on his YouTube channel.
According to the former India and Kolkata Knight Riders batsman, the vice-captain's position should generally be used to identify the next captain.
"You think about a vice-captain from what perspective? That he is next in line, that if the captain goes, the second one will come, but the second should either be of the same age or younger,"
The former opener believes Rahul's experience and cricketing intelligence cannot be questioned, but his age could work against him when considering India's long-term leadership structure.
"If you are making a vice-captain who is eight years older than the captain, as good as KL Rahul is, he is a good captaincy candidate, he has got a good cricketing brain, but he is not getting younger."
"If he is doing the vice-captaincy for a 26-year-old captain, he is not the next in line.
That is the reality," Chopra added.BCCI selectors made the leadership change in May, with KL Rahul taking over the role previously held by Rishabh Pant.
The appointment came during a period of transition for India's Test side, with Gill established as captain at the age of 26. Rahul, meanwhile, brings substantial international experience and has previously led India in Test cricket.
Chopra's argument centres less on Rahul's leadership ability and more on succession planning. His point is that if the vice-captain is expected to step into the captain's role, age and long-term continuity become important considerations.
Rahul's presence nevertheless gives India an experienced leadership figure alongside Gill, while Pant remains an important part of the Test setup.
