The exclusion of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi from India's latest U-19 squad has caused quite a stir, particularly given the teenager's meteoric rise on the international cricket scene. The 15-year-old batting sensation has already made his senior India debut and was one of the standouts in the country's successful 2026 U-19 World Cup campaign.

India have named separate U-19 squads for the upcoming 50-over and multi-day series against Australia. The three one-day matches will be staged at Rajkot on 18, 21 and 23 September, while the two multi-day matches have been scheduled to be played in Rajkot and Ahmedabad between September 27 and October 8. Despite being well within the age range, Sooryavanshi has not been selected.

Why has Vaibhav Sooryavanshi been left out of India's U-19 squad?

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's absence has nothing to do with form or fitness. Neither is it because they are looking to ignore him. Rather, it's because of the BCCI's eligibility policy that doesn't allow a player to participate in two U-19 World Cups.

The 15-year-old left-hander was part of the Indian contingent that won the 2026 ICC U-19 World Cup and played a star role in the title-winning campaign. He scored one of the most memorable innings of the tournament, a stunning 175 off 80 balls in the final against England. He smashed 15 fours and 15 sixes on his way to scoring and helped India reach their first-ever U-19 World Cup. He was also the Player of the Tournament.

While age is a big factor in deciding if a player will make it to the next U-19 World Cup, there are exceptions. The BCCI had a policy to not allow a player to appear in more than one edition of the U-19 World Cup, regardless of an age eligibility rule that might still apply.

The regulation has already impacted many players, such as Washington Sundar. Despite being eligible to make the 2018 U-19 World Cup team, he was ineligible to represent India at the U-19 level after having participated in the 2016 edition of the championship.

Therefore, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's omission from the latest U-19 team cannot really be seen as an issue in his progression. He has already moved on to bigger things, and the young talent has made India's senior T20I squads for the matches against Ireland and England in June. He has also been picked for the 2026 Asian Games squad, and has since continued to be considered for senior-level fixtures, including the upcoming T20I series in Zimbabwe.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has now made his senior India debut and will most likely stay in the set-up for the time being. And while technically he would still be eligible to play U-19 cricket, thanks to his age, the BCCI's one-World-Cup rule prevents him from being able to participate in another one.

The absence of the 15-year-old is, then, more of an indication that his career will progress in a different direction than the U-19 level.
