Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are officially hunting for a new skipper ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The search began after former Indian Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane announced his retirement from all formats of cricket in July 2026. Regarding the same, former India all-rounder Suresh Raina has backed a youngster from KKR squad as ideal candidate to captain the 3-time champions.

Suresh Raina names next captain of KKR

KKR are expected to enter the IPL 2027 season with a major leadership decision to make. The franchise has endured two underwhelming campaigns in succession and will now need to identify a new captain following Rahane’s retirement. Several names have emerged as potential options, including Hardik Pandya and KL Rahulwho have been linked with a possible move to the Kolkata-based franchise. However, Raina feels KKR may not need to look outside their existing setup.

Speaking ahead of the UPT20 League final in Lucknow, Raina pointed towards Rinku Singh as a player who has already shown enough leadership ability to deserve an opportunity at the IPL level. He further urged the franchise to give Rinku greater responsibility rather than immediately pursuing an established captain from another team.

“Rinku Singh’s captaincy has been worthy of praise. This is his fourth season and fourth final with Meerut Mavericks. KKR are searching for a captain, but I think they may have already found one. They should invest in Rinku Singh and give him a few matches. You never know,” Raina said in a video shared by the UPT20 League.

Leadership record strengthens Raina’s case

Raina’s recommendation comes after an impressive run of leadership performances from Rinku at the domestic level. The batter recently guided Meerut Mavericks to the UPT20 title in 2026, adding another successful campaign to his growing leadership résumé.

The triumph was particularly significant considering that Rinku had already taken the Mavericks to the final in the previous edition. Reaching the title clash in consecutive seasons has highlighted his ability to handle responsibility while performing on the field.

His captaincy experience also extends beyond the UPT20. Rinku has led Uttar Pradesh in domestic competitions, including the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy, giving him exposure to different formats and challenging match situations.

Long association with KKR

Rinku also has the advantage of knowing the KKR setup inside out. He joined the franchise in 2018 and gradually developed into one of their most dependable and recognisable players.

His memorable performances in Kolkata colours have made him a fan favourite, while his contribution to the franchise’s IPL 2024 title-winning campaign further strengthened his standing within the team.

KKR’s decision for 2027 could therefore come down to whether they prefer an experienced external leader or choose to develop someone already connected to the franchise.
