Delhi: Big Bash League (BBL) is going to be played for the first time in India. Cricket Australia (CA) is preparing to make this historic match different and special from the ordinary T20 match. The first match of the 16th season of BBL will be played on 12 December at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. In this, the current champion Perth Scorchers will face Melbourne Renegades.
According to Cricket Australia officials, the match to be held in Chennai will be completely organized in the style of Big Bash. The aim of the league is to give the Indian audience the same atmosphere which they have been watching on TV till now. During the match, BBL's distinct identity will be highlighted through music and a number of on-field activities.
BBL officials said that several options were discussed to organize the match in India. However, Chennai was selected after the advice and cooperation of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The strong cricket culture of the city and the hosting capacity of Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) were also important reasons behind this.
Officials hope that the local spectators in Chepauk will show tremendous enthusiasm for this match. The stadium has a seating capacity of about 35 thousand spectators and the organizers hope that the ground will be completely full during the match.
Keeping in mind the cricket lovers of Chennai, the organizers of Big Bash want to include many popular faces in the program. Matthew Hayden, former Australian opening batsman and associated with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), will be part of the commentary team.
Apart from this, the possibility of Michael Hussey's participation is also being expressed. The biggest desire of the organizers is to associate former Indian captain and Chennai Super Kings legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni with this event. Officials indicated that efforts may be made to contact him.
BBL wants a fast and batsman-friendly pitch to be prepared for the match in Chennai. The priority of the organizers is to organize an exciting T20 match with high runs. This means that instead of Chepauk's traditional spin-friendly conditions, this time we may see a fast pitch.
