The East Zone drew their way to victory in the final of the 2026 Duleep Trophy against mighty South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

A huge first-innings lead saw off Ishan Kishan's men clinch the coveted trophy, which eluded them for a decade after winning the prestigious tournament back-to-back in 2011-12 and 2012-13.

It was not just a well-deserved win for the East Zone but also one of the most dominant displays by any team in the tournament as they laid down the law in all five days of the final. And it was Kishan's brilliant runs that heralded the era of their dominance in the tournament.

Ishan Kishan turns the final into his own stage

The final belonged, almost definitively, to Ishan Kishan. Having won the toss and chosen to bat, East Zone ratcheted up an enormous 708 in their first innings. At the heart of that mountain of runs was Kishan, who put on a breathtaking 270 to put South Zone under immense pressure.

Another century scored by Kumar Kushagra (101) saw East Zone's batting line-up refuse to let South Zone settle into the contest.

When their innings finally finished, East Zone had built up a staggering lead of 372. South Zone valiantly fought back and, with captain Tilak Varma coming agonizingly close to a century before falling for 99, Devdutt Padikkal provided 62. However, their efforts could only stretch to 336.

For East Zone, their first-innings lead was more than enough to put them in the driving seat. Rather than just sitting back and defending their position, Kishan's men chose to go on the attack again.

East Zone refuse to take their foot off the pedal

With the title within touching distance, East Zone could have taken a defensive stance. Instead, they continued to pile on the runs.

Kishan returned to the middle and added another 80 to his extraordinary tally for the match, while Shikhar Mohan added a useful 52.

On the final day, Md Kounain Quraishi provided the necessary finishing flourish as he completed a century and was finally out on a score of 116 as East Zone eventually declared on 388/7. That left South Zone with an almost impossible target and, more crucially, too little time to even think about attempting the chase.

The final minutes had an unwanted sense of inevitability about them. There would be no dramatic last-day collapse or last-over finish. Instead, it was the team which had dominated the contest from the opening innings which would run away with the victory.

The match itself finished in a draw, but the result was more than enough for East Zone to lift the Duleep Trophy on the back of their commanding first-innings lead.

14 years later, East Zone are champions again

The significance of the triumph extends far beyond the match itself.

East Zone's latest title is their third Duleep Trophy championship and their first in 14 years. Their previous two victories came consecutively in 2011–12 and 2012–13. For a side which had waited more than a decade to return to the top, the 2026 triumph is a significant chapter in East Zone's domestic cricket history.

Kishan's leadership also played a key role in the story. The wicketkeeper-batsman not only captained the side to the title but produced the defining individual performance of the final.

Ishan Kishan finished the final with an astonishing 350 runs across two innings.

His first-innings 270 was the innings that broke South Zone's resistance, while his second-innings 80 saw East Zone maintain their stranglehold on the contest. He was subsequently named Player of the Match.

South Zone's Tilak Varma, despite the disappointment of falling one run short of a century in the final, was rewarded for his consistency throughout the tournament and named Player of the Series.

In the end, though, the biggest celebration went to East Zone.

Fourteen years after their last Duleep Trophy triumph, they had finally returned to the summit. And they did so in emphatic fashion – with a huge first-innings score, a commanding lead, an outstanding captain's performance and a trophy which had been waiting a very long time to come home.
