Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerged victorious in the IPL 2024 finaldefeating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by a dominant eight wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday. This win added another trophy to their cabinet, alongside their wins in 2012 and 2014.
Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc justified his hefty price tag, living up to his reputation as one of the world’s best T20 bowlers. He delivered a sensational opening spell, taking two crucial wickets for a mere four runs. This set the tone for a dominant KKR bowling performance, restricting SRH to a paltry 113 runs – the lowest total ever recorded in an IPL final.
This was Starc’s second stellar performance against SRH this season, having picked up 3/34 in the first Qualifier. His consistent brilliance throughout the IPL cemented his place as a vital cog in KKR’s championship run.
Despite losing Sunil Narine early in the chase, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (39) and Venkatesh Iyer (52 not out) put on a commanding display. Their 91-run partnership effectively knocked the wind out of SRH’s sails.
Iyer, the left-handed batter, played a blistering knock, reaching his fifty off just 24 balls. He fittingly hit the winning runs, sparking joyous celebrations amongst the KKR camp. Skipper Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten at the other end on 6.
This victory reaffirmed KKR’s position as a dominant force in the IPL. They finished the league stage at the top of the table with 20 points, showcasing their consistency throughout the season.
